Through my artwork, I strive to celebrate what it means to be truly human.
I want to dignify humanity in an honest and real manner. My work celebrates the fundamental human emotions. Some times up some times down but always the beautiful dance of life.
My art reflects a return to the clarity, essence, and beauty of the human experience. I hope that all who view my work can take with them the joy of this experience.
Medium
While a classically trained sculptor, I recently created the unique medium of acid on stainless steel and have been exploring and expanding the artistic possibilities of this new art form. Each piece is created with electro-plating, various acids, grinders, blowtorches and dry ice, resulting in a multi-layered effect that reveals different elements depending on the angle of light--much like a hologram. The multi-layered image compels you to question, stretch and examine it from a variety of angles -- finally revealing its true meaning.
Subject Matter
The complexity of the new medium allows me to tell complicated stories of people stereotyped, marginalized or misrepresented by society.
My goal is to draw viewers into a deeper examination and understanding of these communities -- especially those viewers who may be resistant to the message. My previous series in this medium focuses on the dignity and spirituality of the Arab community in Minneapolis. My current focuse is on the Wold of coffee, from the immigrnte coffee pickers to our morning cup. I am currently working on this series in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Colombia.
Working Process
My process includes getting as deeply involved in the community I am portraying as culturally possible. I strive to represent as broad of spectrum of the community as possible and include them in my process to ensure that the work honestly represents their experience.
