Tabernacles

I refer to each of these three dimensional works as Tabernacles. A tabernacle represents various meanings depending on tradition and use. Within the Jewish tradition, this was the dwelling place of Yahweh and a place where God and man met in communion. It’s various parts symbolized the human body, the soul and the spirit. For those Christian traditions which practice the rite known as Eucharist or Holy Communion, a tabernacle is a fixed, locked box in which the Eucharist (consecrated communion hosts) is "reserved" (stored).

Within each box is housed a small portrait painting in oil. The painting represents the soul or our divine aspect and is inspired by Russian and Byzantine Iconography traditions.
