ABOUT
Nocturne: New Ambient Landscapes by Nicholas Harper
While most well known for magical realism portraiture, in this series Harper turns his attention to expressing the sublime qualities of the natural world. His somber landscapes, or Nocturnes as he refers to them, draw upon emotive imprints from places real and imagined, whose memory, when conjured, is felt as much as it is remembered in any literal sense. By using a palette of rich colors heavy with black, pristine glazing and a minimalist approach, His aim is to present seductively moody tableaus cast in mystical light and shrouded in melancholic shadow.
As each emotional vista carves out a space for introspection, giving way to still moments of solemnity and reverence, they allow the viewer to become lost within a twilight reverie. In so doing, Harper intends that each painting become a means of spiritual connectivity, a place of meditation and an homage to the universal principle of beauty.
